Research into Music Channels

What are Music Channels?

Music television is a type of television programming which focuses predominantly on playing music videos from recording artists, usually on dedicated television channels broadcasting on satellite or cable. Music television channels may host their own shows charts, award prizes. Examples are MTVChannel UFX and 4Music.

In 1981 when the first music channel launched, MTV, the real popularisation of music videos began as there became a large output source for these videos to be aired. This led to more music channels popping up which showed different genres of music and had different features which made them different to each other.

Today there are multiple different music channels on TV who each have their own separate target markets and types of music shown and broadcast. Each channel shows music videos for the majority of the day and can show their own version of the 40 biggest hits and have it adjusted for their audience.

Although there are still multiple successful music channels, this is not the most popular way of showing music videos, with youtube being a much more popular service for music videos, especially with them being by choice not in a random order.
